Traditional Stone Carving Art of Jaipur: The Heritage of Kalyan Moorti

"Trace the storied legacy of Jaipur marble sculpting since 1978 and learn how raw blocks of stone transform into living divine reflections."

A Legacy Carved in Stone Since 1978

For more than four decades, Jaipur has been recognized as the stone sculpting capital of India. At Kalyan Moorti Kala Kendra, founded in 1978 by Pt. Ghanshyam Lal Natha along with late Shri Surender Kumar Natha, our workshop has preserved the ancient Shilpa Shastra tradition across generations.

The Five Stages of Handcrafted Sculpture

Creating a breathtaking marble statue involves patience, devotional reverence, and master craftsmanship:

  1. Stone Selection (Shila Chayan): Inspecting unblemished blocks of Makrana marble for grain density, color consistency, and natural resonance.
  2. Rough Chiseling (Aakaar Srijan): Drawing divine proportions according to sacred measurement units (Taalamana) and blocking out basic anatomical forms.
  3. Intricate Detailing (Shilpa Sringara): Chiseled by hand using miniature iron tools to carve fine features—facial expressions, ornaments, folds of dhoti, and crowns.
  4. Multi-stage Polishing (Ghisai & Chamak): Utilizing natural stone powders and water to achieve a soft satiny gleam without harsh artificial lacquers.
  5. Netronmeelan & Gold Work: The sacred final ritual of painting eyes and embellishing the deity with 24 Karat gold leaf.
